Hampden Junior softball eliminates Bangor in District Tournament

Tuesday night in Bangor at Bangor West, Kathryn Gilio ripped a 2-run triple during a six run second inning to help lead Hampden to a 11-6 elimination win over Bangor in the District 3 Junior League softball tournament.

Leading 4-1 heading into the second inning, Hampden sent 10 batters to the plate to score six runs and take a 10-1 lead. Gilio led the way with her 2-run triple in the inning. Abby Martin and Allison Doble each added an RBI ground out, and Kylie Fogg had an RBI single in the inning.

Hampden added one run in the fourth on an RBI single by Dylan Hotham for an 11-1 lead. Bangor got four runs back in the bottom of the inning on two walks, three hit batters, and a 2-run single by Kami Prendergast.

Bangor plated one more run in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 11-6, but could not overcome the early deficit as the game was called due to insufficient daylight.

Hitting for Hampden was Gilio (triple, two RBIs), Hotham (single, RBI), Fogg (single, RBI), Sarah Lamberton (single), and Olivia Plaisted (single).

Kristi Melanson was the winning pitcher, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit. She walked five, hit three batters, and struck out seven.

Bangor hitters were Prendergast (two singles, two RBIs) and Annie Guare (single, RBI).

Taylor Hutchinson was impressive from inside the circle for Bangor. She came on in relief to start the third inning and worked the final four innings allowing just one Hampden hit. She gave up one run (unearned), walked three and struck out three to put out the Broncos fire.

Hampden takes on 1-1 Glenburn at 6:00pm Wednesday night in an elimination game.
